Arrogance and Stupidity Abound
I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to get everything I've started writing on-line for the blog this month. This one, however, is short.
I read today about allegations of gang rape by BYU football players. The story is a seventeen year old girl was picked up at the mall, taken back to an apartment, got drunk and passed out and woke up to one of the men having sex with her while being watch by other naked men who later took their turn.
Okay, first, why is a seventeen year-old girl going to an apartment with a bunch of men? Granted, in Utah, one tends to assume everyone behaves according to their public pronouncements of faith. It probably didn't occur to her that BYU students would take advantage of her. How extremely unfortunate she has to learn about public image and private practice in such an awful and violating manner.
Second, what kind of idiot perpetrates something like this? Did they think she would thank them for the privilege of being raped by BYU athletes? Did anyone stop to think, "Gosh, this could ruin my career and my life." Obviously not. Of course, men are notorious for thinking with their dick, especially college age men. Not to mention they were probably drunk as well. Like Robin Williams has said, "God gave man a brain and a penis, but only enough blood to run one at a time." This, of course, assumes the story is true, which has yet to be verified.
Finally, what irritates me the most right now is the comments of the BYU spokesman: "Certainly there will be an honor code review." Honor Code review? Are you kidding me? Who cares about the stupid BYU Honor Code? What arrogance. These are serious allegations that are just a wee bit out of the jurisdiction of BYU's review board. If the allegations are true they belong behind bars and who cares if they are allowed to continue to attend BYU or not.
