Ruminations

D is so tired he can barely keep his eyes open, but sleep evades him because all he can think about is all the work that is piled up waiting for him at his job. So instead of getting the sleep he needs, he's logged into the office trying to get some work done, and I am brewing him a café mocha to help him focus.

I suppose I should be grateful for technology that allows him to be at home instead of trapped at the office, but I sometimes wonder how long humanity can keep up the pace. How long before we self destruct? How long can use drugs to alter our natural rhythms—caffeine to keep us a wake, wine to put us back to sleep—before it starts taking a toll?

Some would argue it already is taking a toll. I tend to agree.
